- Self-Defense
Our Roots...
At Island Budokan Karate and Judo, we practice a specific art called Shorinjiryu Kenyukai, which focuses on the spiritual development of individuality in mind and body (or, in Japanese, "doku ji gyo seki"). This concept of personal development lies at the heart of every class we teach and every interaction students have with the dojo.
When you join Island Budokan Karate and Judo, you not only become a steward of the Shorinjirui Kenyukai tradition, but you also become a steward of your own personal development and growth. Will you join us?
What our students and families have to say
“This is one of the hidden gems in Long Island. Traditional style Karate school led by Sensei Hayes. A great place to learn martial art abilities, self-defense, and the philosophy of karate. The focus is on self-growth through the cultivation of mind and body. Love it!”

“Attending Island Budokan, is one of the main reasons my children (ages 7 and 9) are confident, respectful and compassionate. But these are only a few of the values that are taught/reinforced in the Dojo… I also, recently joined the Dojo. At the age of 41, with zero Martial Arts experience, I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy every minute of class. It is a mental and physical challenge, as well as an education in an ancient art…”

“The dojo is an amazing place. It has taught me so much not just learning techniques, but learning about manners, respect, responsibility, effort, appreciation and how to be a good citizen. I first came to the dojo when I was 6 years old. Since then it has taught me so much, about martial arts, and about life…”
